African Day at the Mall of America
Saturday October 6th was the close out day for the Pan African Trade and Investment Summit, fittingly titled African Day. A few friends and I rode on the light rail to the Mall of America where the celebration was taking place. On any given day, the Mall of America - the nations largest retail and entertainment complex - is a buzz with hundreds and hundreds of people. It is the kind of place that magnifies the life and culture of America, and to intergrate that with African culture and style was significantly monumental.

I knew we were running a little late, but I was determined to be a part of the day and festivities. I didn't really have an idea of what to expect as I walked through the mall entrance toward the rotunda where the event was taking place.

It was a wonderful surprise to hear the sound of African beats way before I got to the rotunda. Jabali Afrika, a Kenyan music group that consists of four young men, was on stage entertaining a large crowd with beautiful African drum beats. We made our way to an empty space to get a better view. The group was dressed in traditional maasai print costumes and were expertly playing different beats on various percussion instruments. There was clapping and cheering as Jabali Afrika performed and invited a few people to join in the dancing  on stage. Floor upon floor of the mall was lined with people looking in on the celebration while advertently moving to the African beat.

There was a feeling of warmth, joy, celebration, home in the atmosphere as people mingled and interacted with each other. There were families present, kids dancing gleefully as the parents contentedly enjoyed the entertainment.

There were booths too lined with different African arts, crafts, accessories, travel guides, catering service information, tea, coffee and books for Africa. The days celebration which started at twelve were also inclusive of a fashion show by Nyamal Both, contemporary African dance by dancers from Uganda and Congo, as well as poetry and spoken word by Abiola from Nigeria.

Though the event ended at four in the evening, the days celebrations continued way into the night at the Blue Nile Restuarant. Babu, a Kenyan DJ based in New Jersey, fused old school tracks, African music, Reggae, Soul and Hip-hop music that left an enthused eclectic crowd hot and worn out from dancing.

African Day turned out to be a heart warming memorable day, and a huge success to its' sponsors, Mshale, Kilimanjaro Entertainment and the group of organisers of Pan African Trade and Investment Summit.

MANDUGU DIGITAL NEW RELEASE
DIGITAL SOKA
East Africa’s renowned music producer's: MANDUGU DIGITAL have come once again kicking and scoring with a full hit album titled DIGITAL SOKA., a world cup project which has given the whole world brilliant soccer songs which are catchy with danceable themes. This album was the genius work of a new artist called Mr. high priest (Elijah muhoro ng'ang'ira) and mandugu's producer Shaky. It is the debut album of Mr. high priest and also the first album from the new Mandugu studio in Kiambu town. The album has done great in the market and in airplay. One will always remember the song titled Goal! From this album that played before every world cup match on; K.B.Ctv, KISStv, and CLASSICtv. The album has done wonders in sales, as it has sold more than 16,000 copies and there is a rise in demand since the football fever continues to spread all over the world.
Shaky says "it was memorable working with Priest because he is versatile, creative, good in songwriting and brings a new energy that has for so long being lacking in the local music scene." Mr. high priest love for music began in primary school at musa gitau primary where he and fellow classmates discovered their music talent in the primary school drama festivals and the Christian union fellowships. Most of his classmates have come out to be great musicians too like Jimwat who is flying high in the Genge scene and Hotty who is an R&B diva. After leaving Kiambu high school in the early 2000,he honed his skills by battling many mc,s at Florida 2000 club and other platforms across the country. His friends advised him to record his music after some established musicians started using his lyric's and ideas in their own songs.
"Working with Mandugu digital was a blessing to me. They are creative in beat making and that has helped me a lot because my ideas are so complex other producer's didn't understand me for along time." Mr. high priest says. Listening to this album you will realize that a lot of creativity was invovled:because different genre of music have been mixed in one big "pot" to bring forth one tasty and unforgettable musical "soup”. In the song’s; Digital soccer, Goal!, Sakata, and Mpenzi soccer :different genre have been used like;Dance, kwaito, soccer and techno respectively. Some of the songs are on the internet and one can get to enjoy them by going to youtube and searching for Mandugu digital/digital soka.
Currently Mr. High priest is touring different parts of the country holding concerts for his fans and he is scheduled to perform oversee from early next year. During his free time he is working on a new album to be launched by December 2010."Hakuna cha kuchoka na mambo bado" (there is no time to rest and more hits are to come)Mr. high priest says, when asked if he has any time to rest for he seems so busy lately performing and promoting the Digital Soka album.
