Eritirea fought against all odds to free itself from Ethiopian colonialism. And after 30 years of bitter struggle managed to defeat the Ethiopian colonial army becoming an independent nation when over 99% of the population voted for indpendence. During the stuggle for independence Eritrea received little support from the outside world. Even when Ethiopia declared itself to be a marxist/leninist nation at the height the cold war the west did not support Eritrea as it did elsewhere to counter the soviet influnce during the cold war. In fact while the Soviet Union was pouring massive military support to the Ethiopian regime the west was also supporting the regime economincally thus prolonging the suffering of the Eritrean people.
In my opinion and perhaps many others, the main reason the west worked against Eritrean independence was because it perceived the EPLF to be an independant organization that sought a meaning full independence for the nation. When one considers the support given to ruthless African dictators such as Mobutu and the countless others, including Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia; the only logical conclusion is that the west is against the presence of any viable and truly sovreign nation in Africa.
Inspite of the sustained attempts by the western media to suppress the truth, there is overwhelming evidence that the west, led by the US, financed and encouraged the Ethiopian regime to invade Eritrea in 1998.
However, the unity and sacrfice paid by the Eritrean people coupled with the guidance of a wise and farsighted leadership managed to defeat the Ethiopians once again.
in 2001, when the Ethiopian military defeat became apparent, the west rushed in to save the regime by making it sign a peace agreement in Algiers.
Eritrea is currently experiencing hardships as a result of a concerted efforts by the Ethiopian regime and its western handlers. However, to their frustration and disgust; Eritrea continues to build its infrastructures, defences and is well on its way of creating a truly independent nation.
There are lots of issues to criticize the Government of Eritrea. One thing that I don’t understand of these people like Haile is, why you need to lie and mislead readers that might support your case. Don’t you think they might one day find the truth on the ground and take you as one that should not be trusted? Or is it that you don’t mind as long your short sighted aim is reached?
I could pinpoint several aspects on the article to illustrate my case. But I will just comment on the following quotation that Eritrean readers would call it a white-lei: “If you don’t pay the 2%, your family will have problems,” said Haile. “That means that you are not Eritrean.
What has your family to do with your paying or not paying to the 2% Healing Fund? You pay yours and your family pays their part, IF THEY WISH to. Are none of you interested in living, investing, claim their right as citizens etc. in the Stat of Eritrea, there is nothing to worry about you keep on living where ever you want and visit Eritrea as many times as you want. I am a living example for that. I live in Sweden and I am not planning to buy a house or invest in anything in Eritrea at the moment, thus there is need for me to pay 2% at the moment. But I do travel at least twice a year to Eritrea to see my dear family. I am still a very proud Eritrean and my family back home have no problem!
Mrs Almaz, I really appriciate your concern but we Eritreans don’t need any interference from US or any foreign power. The only thing you, like any Eritean patiots, give your voice for border settlement. Am assuring you we will ahve permenent peace with out shaebia or PFDJ.
