Sabuya Music Promotion and Fresh Sounds Events will present a concert featuring Esther Akoth, commonly known as Akothee at the PurpleRose Event Place in Coon Rapids on November 1.
Doors open at 7 p.m. with an opening act featuring local Kenya Minnesota talent Fanaka, Mobby Mobisa and Glayonce Pinky.
Flyers doing the rounds on social media have advertised the tickets at $40 and VIP tickets for $100, payable via CashApp.
Akothee, who is currently on a US tour, is a popular Kenyan singer and entrepreneur who invites both praise and controversy in equal measure. She describes herself as The Queen of Kanungo. Kanungo is dance music and moves indigenous to the Luo people of Kenya. She sings in Swahili, English and Luo. Her stance on issues related to women has also earned her the nickname the ‘president of single mothers.’
A humanitarian mission she undertook early this year in drought stricken northern Kenya sparked a Change.org petition to the president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta to bestow on her a Presidential Volunteer Award.
