Voting is one of the most important rights and responsibilities in a democracy. It gives citizens an opportunity to participate in decisions that affect their families, neighborhoods, schools, businesses and communities.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, Minnesotans will head to the polls to elect leaders at the federal, state and local levels. The Somali American Coalition of Minnesota (SAC) encourages every eligible voter to participate, make an informed choice and exercise their right to vote.

Your vote is your voice. Your choice is your right.

Throughout American history, generations of people have worked to expand access to the ballot box and protect the principle that eligible citizens should have a meaningful say in their government. The struggle for voting rights reminds us that participation in democracy is both a hard-won freedom and an opportunity to help shape the future.

Every election presents an opportunity for voters to consider the issues that matter to them, learn about candidates and ballot questions, and make their own decisions.

Voting is personal. Your ballot belongs to you, and no one else gets to decide how you cast it.

Make a plan to vote

Minnesota’s general election takes place Tuesday, Nov. 3. Most polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters who are in line by 8 p.m. have the right to vote, even if they have not reached the front of the line.

Eligible voters who are not registered can register at their polling place on Election Day with acceptable proof of residence.

Minnesota voters must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old on Election Day and residents of the state for at least 20 days. People with felony convictions can vote if they are not currently incarcerated for a felony offense, provided they meet other eligibility requirements.

Voters can find their polling locations, check their registration status and view sample ballots through the Minnesota Secretary of State’s official website, mnvotes.gov.

Early in-person voting remains available through Monday, Nov. 2, at designated locations. Voters should check with their local election office for locations and hours.

Know your rights

Every eligible voter deserves an opportunity to participate without intimidation or interference.

Voters have the right to cast their ballots privately, request assistance when needed and receive information about the voting process. Election officials are available to help voters understand procedures and resolve questions.

Minnesota also provides voting information in multiple languages, including Somali, through the Secretary of State’s Office.

If you have questions about voting, call 1-877-600-VOTE (8683) or visit mnvotes.gov.

Your participation matters

Decisions made by elected officials can affect education, housing, transportation, public safety, economic opportunities and the delivery of public services.

By participating in elections, voters contribute to the democratic process and help determine who represents their communities.

The Somali American Coalition of Minnesota is committed to civic empowerment and strengthening community participation. The organization believes that informed, engaged communities are essential to a healthy democracy.

As Election Day approaches, take time to learn about the choices on your ballot. Discuss the issues with family, friends and neighbors. Encourage eligible voters to find accurate election information and make a plan to participate.

Whether you are voting for the first time or have participated in many elections, your voice deserves to be heard.

On Nov. 3, exercise your right to vote.

Your vote. Your choice. Your voice.
