The Loft’s Poetry Out Loud program, coordinated by Loft Education Outreach Manager Kathryn Savage, presents an evening of readings centering on East African voices. The East African Voices event, an initiative of Savage’s, includes Congressman Keith Ellison who will be appearing to read from his book and relate the story of connecting with Minnesota State Poetry Out Loud champion Faiza Abubakar when they met at the National Competition in Washington, D.C.

This event will also feature short readings by Lula Saleh, Sarah Ogutu, Abdi Phenomenal, and Abdihamid Geyre. Faiza Abubakar and Keith Ellison will also take the mic with longer pieces. Afterward, there will be a discussion and audience-generated questions moderated by University of Minnesota Professor Abdi Samatar.
