A last minute booking with the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis brings back Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 for a surprise performance on Wednesday, November 23rd. It’s the day before Thanksgiving and a perfect way to prepare for a day of thankfulness.
Although some are still reeling from the elections of November 8th, we can be thankful the results don’t compare to the political climate and ruling party under which Seun Kuti’s father lived. In fact, it was politics that often set the tone for Fela Kuti’s protest music.
Seun learned from his father and now brings his father’s band into our current lives. Seun’s music will surely speak to both the past of Nigeria and to the current milieu that we face with President-elect Trump.
The lyrics to one of his latest songs, Gimme My Vote Back, ought to ignite a spirit of unity in the audience. His music alone holds such power and persuasion a sold-out crowd can be expected.
“I give them my votes
Them no give me democracy
Business now the priority
Instead of the working majority
I give them my votes
And them abuse it
New government
New excuses…”
