BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — Brooklyn Park Mayor Hollies Winston is inviting Minnesotans from across the state and beyond to attend Sunday’s Liberian Independence Day parade, describing it as “more than local” and a celebration of “pride, community, family and culture” as one of the country’s largest Liberian communities marks Liberia’s 179th Independence Day.
The parade, which drew thousands during its inaugural last year in neighboring Brooklyn Center, moves to Brooklyn Park this year. Organizers with We Are Liberian, the local nonprofit that is organizing it, expect another large turnout for the free family-friendly celebration featuring a parade, live entertainment, games and Liberian food.
“This isn’t just a local celebration,” Winston said in a video invitation posted on social media. “This is a global celebration with folks coming from all over, but also a celebration of pride, community, family and culture.” He also praised the contributions of Brooklyn Park’s Liberian community and called the event “a partnership with the city of Brooklyn Park.”
Minnesota is home to the nation’s largest Liberian population, with Brooklyn Park serving as the community’s largest hub. The parade begins at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 26, at North Hennepin Community College, 7411 85th Ave. N., followed by a daylong celebration in the park.
