Until November 2022, Minnesota had never elected a Black woman to its state Senate. In November 8, 2022 it elected Three Black women to the chamber in one swoop. They take their seats today, January 3, 2023 when the legislature convenes. Photo: Courtesy Minnesota Legislature

The Minnesota state Senate convenes today at noon and for the first time will have Black women among its ranks and will have a Black man as its president, also for the first time as Bobby Joe Champion becomes the first Black person to do so.
