NAIROBI - The curtains finally fell on the seventh edition of the World Social Forum in the Kenyan Capital of Nairobi with a new transsexual phenomenon, gaining root in Africa.

The forum that ended on January 25 saw the lesbians, gays and trans-sexual community gaining currency not only in Kenya but also in the entire African continent.

African-born immigrants from Togo, Congo, Liberia and Cameroon who live in Minnesota brought their families to the ZYOMBI International Project (ZIP) for Christmas gifts a week from Christmas.

Mshale Senior Staff Writer, Robert Sayon Morris, recently interviewed Miss Black USA, Celi Marie Dean. Miss Dean, a charming young lady, is a Liberian. Her father is Mr. Charles Dean. He resides in Minnesota.

For over 16 years, nearly 20 thousand Liberians fleeing a vicious civil war benefited from an American government hospitality program called “Temporary Protected Status” (TPS), a stopgap immigration measure granted to eligible nationals of designated countries. The program gave Liberians the legal permission to live and work in the United States as long as conditions in their homeland remain precarious.

A survey conducted in early 2006 with refugee populations in Northwest Hennepin County shows that there is a disconnect between the physical and mental health needs of survivors of torture and war trauma and services provided as victims shy away from discussing their experiences with their doctors. The survey conducted by the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) concludes that refugees did not see the benefit of discussing past traumatic experience with their doctors.

"She said, 'since I'm having boys, I'm not going to die cooking for you guys, you're going to learn how to cook!'" Steven Kaggwa tells me as we sit in his restaurant.  He's speaking of his mother who raised five boys and one girl in Uganda.

 On May 15, 2006, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit reversed the Immigration Judge’s denial of asylum, withholding of removal, and relief under the Convention Against Torture to Mr. Abrahim Brima Bah, a citizen of Liberia.

Liberians from many parts of the Twin Cities joined the congregation of Ebenezer Community Church and broke ground for the construction of a $5M church edifice. The program took place on Sunday, June 4th on a 4.3 acre land located at 9200 West Broadway, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. It brought together many dignitaries and Liberians from all walks of life. It is one of the biggest projects undertaken by an African immigrant community in this region.

Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights announced on June 22 the launch of the US chapter of Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission during a news conference at the Minnesota State Capitol rotunda.
