Sommerfest 2018 celebrates Mandela Centenary with Music for Mandela

The Minnesota Orchestra celebrated Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday with a ‘Day of Music’ both indoors and outdoors featuring different musicians and genres on Saturday, July 21, 2018 in downtown Minneapolis. Mandela’s eldest daughter, Makaziwe Mandela, kicked off the celebration the night before. The Nelson Mandela Centenary 10-day celebration will explore musical expressions of peace, freedom and reconciliation and will conclude with a five-city tour of South Africa. Ladysmith Black Mambazo will perform on July 31 concluding with a send-off of the orchestra on August 1. Mshale was there on the ‘Day of Music’ on Saturday, July 21, 2018 to capture the scenes.
