Brooklyn Park mayor Hollies Winston and Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah are the chief guests at this year’s Ghana Independence Day celebration being held on Saturday, March 18 in Mounds View.
Ghana Council of Minnesota, a consortium of Minnesota’s Ghanaian organizations, is hosting the event which is held annually to mark Ghana’s independence from European rule on March 6, 1957. It was the first African country to gain independence.
The evening will feature traditional Ghanaian food, culture and music under this year’s theme of “Building a United, Healthy and Sustainable Community.”
Both featured guests have made history in their respective roles. Mayor Winston took office in January as the first Black mayor of Brooklyn Park while Mr. Adofo-Mensah is the first Black man to hold the sole title of general manager in Vikings history. He is into second year as Vikings GM.
